Metropolis

My Observations

Conflicts:

  • Rich vs. poor love dynamic
    • Freder from "club of sons" and "eternal garden"
    • Maria from the underground
      • ★Do you believe that opposites attract?
      • ★Is there an ulterior desire to see how the other side lives?
      • ★Do you think these scenarios occur in the real world or is it a movie phenomenon?
    • Examples: Pretty Woman, Aladin, Cinderella, Maid in Manhattan
    • Movies in society today still use this dynamic
  • Good vs. evil
    • Maria represents the good/bringer of hope
    • John and the mad scientist represent the evil
      • Seeks to destroy Maria's built trust and hopefulness within the working population
      • Took Maria's beauty and exploited her for his own gain
        • Sheds light on men's view of women as objects- still present in our society
  • Manipulation
    • They used the robot clone of Maria to incite rebellion to give him cause to put them down
      • I found similarities to our society with the distrust in information on social media
        • Today anyone can make anything up and put it online for it to become viral with little to no repercussions
          • ★Did anyone notice any connections to the power of miscommunication from the film to our society today?
Setting:
  • Futuristic buildings, tall bridges, planes, traffic, trains
    • The film took inspiration from seeing the skyscrapers in New York in 1924
  • I feel that the underground represents the unseen social inequalities of society in a seemingly perfect, modern city
    • The creator must have little hope for the future of society if this was his futuristic vision
      • ★Do you think there are workers in our society who feel symbolic toward the underground workers?

Takeaways from the Class Discussion

For future assignments and movies, I will pay closer attention to details on the set. So many of my peers made great observations of things such as a pentagram and related it to meaning in the film. I realized that there are so many layers to understanding a film, not just the plot and characters.

5th Element- Fashion Show

Designer Inspiration: Sheri Hill Sherri Hill designs elegant evening wear. We were inspired by her simplistic looks with minor three-dimensional elements.  How does it connect to The 5th Element ? We were inspired by the main concept of the movie, saving the planet. We decided to use recyclable materials because in the future we hope that there will be a bigger effort into saving the planet.  Creative Process:

Creative Process Behind our Final Project

Don't Look Up Poster Creative Process: We decided to conduct our final project on the film, Don't Look Up. We drew inspiration for our poster from the ideas of politicians and social media blinding the world to the dangers of climate change.  Sofia laid out photos and text while outlining a border to cut and create a new background shape.                                         Me gluing down photos and text for the main piece of our poster.  Sofia beginning to place and glue photos and text on our newly shaped cover piece. Finished Product: We attached the two pieces together with staples to complete the look.
